The $0.30 flat fee is quietly killing your small-order margin — here's the math
"2.9% + $0.30" sounds like a rounding error. But that flat 30 cents is a fixed cost charged on every single order — and on low-priced items it quietly becomes one of the biggest bites out of your margin. Here's exactly how much, at each price point.
Two fees, two very different behaviors
On the Shopify Basic plan, Shopify Payments charges 2.9% + $0.30 per online transaction. Those are two different kinds of cost:
- The 2.9% is proportional — it scales with the order, so it's the same share of a $10 sale as a $1,000 sale.
- The $0.30 is fixed — the same 30 cents whether the order is $10 or $1,000. And a fixed cost is brutal on small tickets, because it's a much bigger slice of a small number.
Add them together and the effective fee rate — total fee ÷ order value — climbs sharply as your order size drops.
The effective rate by order value
Same 2.9% + $0.30 fee, applied across order sizes:

A $10 order pays an effective 5.9% — nearly double the headline 2.9% — purely because of the flat 30 cents. The smaller your average order, the more that fixed fee dominates.
What to actually do about it
- Raise your average order value. Bundles, "frequently bought together," volume discounts, and free-shipping thresholds all push the ticket up — which mechanically shrinks the flat fee's bite.
- Set a sensible order minimum or minimum for free shipping so you're not shipping $6 orders that barely clear the fee.
- Price small items with the fee in mind. If your $10 impulse-buy costs 5.9% to process plus your product cost, the real margin may be thinner than you think.
- Watch the true per-order profit, not revenue — after both fee components and your cost of goods.
